Definition of Amplification, DNA

Amplification, DNA: The production of multiple copies of a sequence of DNA. Repeated copying of a piece of DNA.
DNA amplification plays a role in cancer cells. A tumor cell amplifies, or copies, DNA segments as a result of cell signals and sometimes environmental events.
Amplification can occur in vivo (in the living individual) or in vitro (literally "in glass", or in a plastic vessel in the laboratory).

Definition of Amplification

Amplification: Making multiple copies of a gene or of any sequence of DNA. Repeated copying of a piece of DNA.
In amplification there is an increase in the number of copies of any particular piece of DNA. Gene amplification plays a role in cancer cells. A tumor cell amplifies, or copies, DNA segments as a result of cell signals and sometimes environmental events.
Amplification can occur in vivo (in the living individual) or in vitro (literally "in glass", or in a plastic vessel in the laboratory).

Definition of Adapter protein

Adapter protein: A protein acts as a connecting molecule. An adapter protein is critical to intermolecular interactions and plays a role in the regulation of signal transduction initiated by engagement of surface receptors on all cell types. Some adapter proteins are expressed in all tissues, while the expression of other adapter proteins is restricted to specific tissues.

Definition of Acquired mutation

Acquired mutation: A mutation (a genetic change) acquired by a somatic cell after conception. Acquired mutations occur in somatic cells, not germ cells, and so cannot be transmitted to the children. However, acquired mutations are transmitted to all cells descended from the mutant cell, giving rise to a clone (colony) of cells marked by the mutation. Some acquired mutations are involved in the development of cancer. Also known as an acquired genetic mutation, somatic mutation, or somatic cell mutation.
